Anna Glantz
Anna Glantz (b. 1989, Concord, MA) lives and works in Los Angeles.
Covering a broad range of materials, techniques, genres, and subjects, Anna Glantz’s curiosity-driven painting practice has taken the form of large scale portraiture, minute assemblage, and absurd historical homage, among others. Recent paintings see her moving beyond identification and cognizance into something altogether more unschooled. Here, anything like figuration or narrative is all but totally subsumed by the primacy of surface and materiality. Her process consists of sanding down and layering paint as she shifts form and color: “I am trying to create a physical integrity, or credibility—a way for a painting to be an image but also be more fundamentally itself, like a consciousness, rather than a facade.” In a time dominated by the frictionless circulation and consumption of images, Glantz all but iconoclastically asks what painting can do not as a producer, and therefore facilitator of images, but as a methodology of arresting and meditation.
